The Throat Cancer Epidemic Most Americans Don't Know They're at Risk For

HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer — a cancer of the back of the throat driven by the same virus behind most cervical cancers — has quietly become one of the fastest-rising cancers in the United States, and it now surpasses cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy. Here is what the research shows about who is at risk, how the treatment has been transformed by immunotherapy, and what you can do today.

The Patient's Own Immune Cells, Reprogrammed to Kill Cancer

The CARTITUDE-4 trial showed that a single infusion of cilta-cel (Carvykti), a CAR-T therapy built from each patient's own immune cells, cut the risk of disease progression or death by 74% compared with standard chemotherapy in lenalidomide-refractory multiple myeloma. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023 and followed by an FDA expanded approval in 2024, the trial is changing when and how this cellular therapy is used.

When 'HER2-Negative' Is No Longer the Whole Story

The DESTINY-Breast06 trial showed that trastuzumab deruxtecan (Enhertu) nearly doubled progression-free survival in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients with very low HER2 expression — a group previously excluded from this class of treatment. The findings, published in the NEJM in June 2024, could reshape how up to 75% of metastatic breast cancer patients are treated.

Phase 3 trial results announced in April 2026 show that daraxonrasib, a once-daily oral pill, extended median survival to 13.2 months in patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer — nearly double the 6.7 months seen with standard chemotherapy.
